Recognizing that systemic change is needed, the Uplift Initiative also invests in strengthening education systems more broadly.

The key focus areas of the Education Program include:

Early Childhood Education

Recognizing the critical importance of the early years in a child's cognitive, social, and emotional development, the Uplift Initiative invests in expanding access to high-quality early childhood education programs. This includes supporting the establishment of community-based pre-schools, training and deploying early childhood educators, and developing age-appropriate curricula

Girls' Education

Empowering girls and young women through education is a top priority for the Uplift Initiative. The program works to dismantle barriers to girls' school enrollment, retention, and learning outcomes. Key interventions include scholarship programs, menstrual health support, gender-responsive teaching practices, and community engagement to shift social norms.

Technical & Vocational Training

To equip youth with future-ready skills, the Uplift Initiative partners with industry leaders to develop demand-driven technical and vocational education and training (TVET) programs. These programs span sectors such as agriculture, renewable energy, digital technologies, fashion design , Arts and Entrepreneur trainings and the care economy, providing pathways to meaningful livelihoods.

Primary Education Access

The initiative works with the Government and other organization to expand access to primary education in Ethiopia rural areas and urban areas that is located in far areas, particularly for marginalized communities, through scholarships, primary school partnerships, and the establishment of community school and distance learning programs. The goal is to cultivate a pipeline of skilled Children’s to drive social, economic, and technological innovation.

Education System Strengthening

Recognizing that systemic change is needed, the Uplift Initiative also invests in strengthening education systems more broadly. This includes supporting teacher training and professional development, improving school infrastructure and learning materials, and working with governments to develop evidence-based education policies and plans.

Advocacy for Educational Policy

The Uplift Initiative recognizes that meaningful and lasting progress in education requires robust policies and frameworks that promote access, equity, and quality. Through its advocacy efforts, the initiative works with governments, international organizations, and civil society to shape education policies at the local, national, and global levels. Key policy advocacy areas include equitable school funding, teacher professional development, inclusive curriculum design, and the protection of the right to education for all.

By driving progress across these key focus areas, the Education Program of the Uplift Initiative aims to unlock the transformative power of education and equip the next generation with the knowledge, skills, and opportunities to build a more just, equitable, and prosperous world.

Quality Education for All

Supporting Vulnerable and Marginalized Communities

The Uplift Initiative places a strong emphasis on addressing the unique educational needs of vulnerable and marginalized communities, including girls, children with disabilities, ethnic and religious minorities, and those affected by conflict and displacement. Through targeted interventions, the program works to dismantle barriers to education, provide specialized support services, and empower communities to advocate for the educational rights of their children.

Alignment with UN Sustainable Development Goal 4 (Quality Education)

The Uplift Initiative’s Education Program is closely aligned with and actively supports the achievement of UN Sustainable Development Goal 4 (Quality Education). The initiative advocates for and works towards ensuring inclusive and equitable quality education and promoting lifelong learning opportunities for all. By partnering with governments, civil society, and other stakeholders, the Uplift Initiative contributes to the global efforts to achieve SDG 4 and ensure that education remains a key driver of sustainable development.

 Synergy with the African Union Agenda 2063 and the 2024 Year of Education

The Uplift Initiative’s Education Program in Ethiopia and across the African continent is also closely aligned with and supportive of the African Union’s Agenda 2063 and the 2024 declared “Year of Education.” The initiative advocates for and works alongside African governments and stakeholders to achieve the vision of “Educating an African Fit for the 21st Century,” by improving access to quality education, investing in teacher development, and empowering youth to become active contributors to their communities and the continent’s transformation. Through these collaborative efforts, the Uplift Initiative aims to help realize the African Union’s ambitious education goals and create a brighter future for all Africans.
